Our Mission

"At Roots, we nurture each child's educational journey, fostering curiosity, sense of self, and community care in a responsive place-based microschool."

Our Vision

Roots is on a mission to redefine the role of “school”, both in the context of the community and in the lives of children. At our core, we are a community of Learners who believe that our early academic experiences have the power to shape not only the trajectory of our education but also how we participate and interact in our immediate and global communities. Our programs, whether full-time elementary schooling or community speaker series, strive to foster connections to oneself, community, and environment. We embrace the idea that significant change often starts at the grassroots level, and we embody this pioneering spirit in all aspects of our work.

Our Beliefs:

When we allow each child to explore their unique interests and figure out “what makes them tick” we are laying the foundation for a life well lived in the pursuit of happiness, purpose, and adventure.

In addition to meeting grade appropriate academic standards, our curriculum focuses on exploring five core themes:

  1. Kindness

  2. Compassion

  3. Self Awareness (Physical + Emotional)

  4. The Beauty of Being an Individual

  5. Connection / Being part of a Larger Whole (the natural world, different cultures, a class, etc.)

We utilize a self directed project based learning approach drawing from the principles of Reggio Emilia and Montessori in conjunction with the intentional use of  technology to maximize the educational experience of each Learner.

Roots Academy offers a place-based, child-led, play-inspired approach to 21st Century Education.

The Roots Approach

Taking full advantage of our wooded campus, and close proximity to an abundance of trails, parks, and conservation land, Roots aims to offer a curriculum rich in direct experience with Nature that nurtures a sense of community and belonging among children, families and the world around us.  Our small class sizes and high adult to child ratios further allow us to offer an emergent curriculum that both embraces the natural rhythms of the world around us and the educational and social emotional needs of the developing child.
