Why Families Choose Roots for Kindergarten

Choosing Kindergarten often brings up more questions than families expect. It is the first time many parents feel the pressure of making a decision that carries weight beyond the present moment.

At Roots, we understand that families are holding both care and concern. You want your child to feel safe, seen, and joyful, and you also want to know they are building a strong foundation for what comes next.

Families choose Roots for Kindergarten because we take both seriously.

Small class sizes and deeply attentive educators.
With just 12 children and two teachers, every child is known well. This allows our educators to respond thoughtfully to each child’s developmental readiness, socially, emotionally, and academically. Children are supported without being rushed or labeled, and learning is shaped around who they are rather than who they are expected to be.

A developmental foundation that supports academic growth.
We prioritize executive function, emotional regulation, and self awareness because these skills underpin long term academic success. Early literacy and numeracy are introduced intentionally and in alignment with best practices, without pressure or premature expectations. Children build confidence as learners while developing the skills they need to engage deeply with academic work over time.

A thoughtful balance of play and structure.
Kindergarten at Roots is carefully designed. Learning is grounded in play, exploration, and meaningful experiences, while also offering clear structure and consistency. Children engage in early literacy work aligned with the science of reading, foundational math experiences, collaborative problem solving, and extended time outdoors that supports focus, resilience, and peer connection.

Preparation for what comes next without rushing what is now.
Roots Kindergarten is not about delaying learning. It is about building it well. Children leave with a strong sense of themselves as learners, an understanding of how they learn best, and the ability to ask for what they need. This confidence and self awareness supports smoother transitions into first grade and beyond.

Many families arrive at Roots thinking about Kindergarten as a one year decision and leave understanding it as the foundation for how their child learns, relates, and grows.

The Adults in the Room Matter

At Roots, we believe that children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and respected. That sense of safety begins with the adults who care for them each day.

Our educators bring a strong foundation in child development, social and emotional learning, and relationship-based teaching. They are thoughtful, reflective practitioners who pay close attention to how children are spoken to, supported, and guided through both challenges and successes.

We invest in ongoing professional learning and reflective practice because we know that the inner work of educators matters. Our classrooms are places where children are met with curiosity rather than judgment, where communication is rooted in respect, and where each child is known as a whole person.

Families often tell us that what sets Roots apart is not just what their children are learning, but how they are being held throughout the day. We take that responsibility seriously.

Families often arrive at Roots with questions and leave with confidence.

“For years, I had a nagging dream about the way my children, and really all children could be learning; Roots has realized that dream in more ways than I could have imagined.”

“Kindergarten at Roots is about curiosity and imagination. Children aren’t given an education, they are invited to experience education; by asking questions and getting their hands dirty to answer them. A focus on nature and community at Roots is the bedrock of understanding the hows and whys that kindergartners so beautifully wonder every day. My son never wants to leave school at the end of the day which is easily one of the best feelings in the world and I am so thankful for that gift Roots has given us.”

What does Kindergarten at Roots Academy Look Like?

Kindergarten at Roots is designed with intention. Each part of the day supports children’s emotional regulation, executive function, curiosity, and emerging academic skills in ways that are developmentally appropriate and deeply responsive to who they are as learners.

Below is a snapshot of how those pieces come together throughout the week.

  • A Holistic Approach to Learning: Our curriculum supports the whole child, including cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Through a combination of child-led exploration and intentionally chosen activities, children are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and engage deeply with their learning.

  • Experienced, Attentive Educators: Our Kindergarten educators are highly qualified and deeply committed to early childhood education. They create a warm, inclusive environment where children feel known, supported, and confident expressing themselves. Small class sizes allow educators to respond thoughtfully to each child’s needs and strengths.

  • Play-Based Learning With Purpose: Play is a powerful driver of learning. Through play-based experiences, children build executive function, problem-solving skills, and intrinsic motivation. These experiences support creativity, imagination, and hands-on exploration while laying the groundwork for academic engagement.

  • Small Class Sizes for Individualized Support: With a maximum of 12 students and two full-time Kindergarten educators, each child receives meaningful attention and guidance. Instruction is tailored to individual learning styles, interests, and developmental readiness, allowing children to grow with confidence and care.

  • A Thoughtfully Designed Learning Environment: Our classrooms are intentionally arranged to support curiosity, independence, and a sense of belonging. Spaces invite children into different kinds of learning, including quiet reading, collaborative play, and hands-on exploration. The environment is designed to feel both engaging and calming, allowing children to move through the day with focus and confidence.

  • Social and Emotional Learning Woven Throughout the Day: Social-emotional development is not a separate part of the curriculum at Roots; it is embedded in everything we do. Children practice cooperation, empathy, and communication through daily interactions, guided problem-solving, and shared experiences. These skills support not only relationships, but also learning and self-regulation in the classroom.

  • Preparation for What Comes Next: Our Kindergarten program builds the foundations children need for success in elementary school and beyond. Early literacy and numeracy are introduced intentionally and in alignment with best practices, alongside problem-solving, critical thinking, and executive function skills. Children leave Kindergarten with confidence in themselves as learners and the ability to engage thoughtfully with new academic expectations.

Together, these experiences build confident, capable learners who are well prepared for the academic and social expectations of first grade and beyond.
