Our Mission

At Roots we believe in educating not just the minds of our students, but also their hearts.

From our program directors to our youngest friends, we are a community of Learners who believe that our early academic experiences have the power to shape not only the trajectory of our education but also how we participate and interact in our immediate and global communities.

We believe that when we allow each child to explore their unique interests and figure out “what makes them tick” we are laying the foundation for a life well-lived in the pursuit of happiness, purpose, and adventure.

Our Core Themes

In addition to meeting grade appropriate academic standards, our curriculum focuses on exploring five core themes:

Our Values

At Roots, we believe that educating young children requires us to get to know not just the individual student, but also their family and community in order to understand each child holistically.

Where we come from and where we have been matters just as much as where we are going.

With an emphasis on place-based education, we explore both academic and interpersonal topics through the lens of five core themes:

Kindness is paramount. By encouraging Learners to consider the ripple effects of their actions we foster not only a community-oriented learning environment, but begin to build the skills necessary for global thinking.

Our work with students is built upon the belief that there is beauty in being an individual and an understanding of our connection to and role within the larger whole (the natural world, different cultures, a class, etc.) Our small class sizes provide children with ample opportunity to explore independently and practice working within a group.

Through inquiry, exploration, and adventure we aim to give children a sense of physical and emotional self awareness that will allow them to meet any situation with confidence and compassion. Tools for self regulation such as yoga, mindfulness, and breathwork are an integral part of our work and time to practice them is woven throughout our every day.

The adventurous spirit of a Roots student lends itself to pursuing subject matter that is both challenging and rigorous. Guided by the interests of our Learning community, we draw from several educational philosophies to create an emergent curriculum that meets the needs of our students and relevant grade level academic standards.
