A new kind of School...

When interviewing Emily, our Elementary Lead Teacher, she submitted a piece of creative writing in place of a cover letter.

This struck me primarily for two reasons -

  1. She was already thinking outside of the box.

  2. The content of the story illustrated just how much “she got it”. The magic, the excitement, the nerves and “buy in” from potential families to try something different.

You can find Emily’s short piece below, and if you too dream of a school created out of love - you’ve found it.

Once upon a time, there lived a young girl who loved the outdoors. She loved the feel of the crisp cool air in her lungs on a fall morning walk; she loved the way the sun sprinkled freckles across her nose on warm summer afternoons; she loved the crunchy snow beneath her boots as she carried her sled up the hill; and, most of all, she loved brushing the brown dirt aside to reveal the first sprouts of the tulips as spring yawned and began to stretch.

This girl believed in magic. She believed in the wonder of the world. And ohhh when this girl learned to read…she believed in stories. She believed stories could scare you, that they could make you laugh, cry, stand up and shout, that stories could move you.

This girl loved to watch things grow and change and she loved to learn. One night the girl had a dream - a dream that she would be given a gift. A gift so special that it would fill her heart with light and she would grow up to share that light with confidence. She woke up from her dream feeling happy. She went downstairs and her mom was waiting at the kitchen table with her favorite morning snack - grapefruit with a tiny bit of sugar sprinkled on top, just like her grandpa used to eat it. Her mom looked excited and maybe a little nervous. She told the girl of a new school growing in her town, conceived out of love and the celebration of individuality. The girl felt a fluttering in her heart and she knew her gift was here.
